"White was a founding member of the Photo-Secession, a friend of Alfred Stieglitz, and a highly praised contributor to photographic exhibitions at home and abroad at the turn of the century. Much of his best work was produced before he moved to New York in 1906, when he still lived far from the medium's hub, in the small Ohio town of Newark, supporting his family as a grocery store bookkeeper. His photographs from this time reveal a vision nurtured by and dependent on the customs and values of small-town life.

i got an email yesterday morning about vivian maier, a fascinating street photographer from the 1950s-1990s. the story of her life recounted by people who knew her really caught my attention; she was more or less alone for her entire life.
maier's work, discovered after her death, includes over 100,000 negatives, thousands of prints, and undeveloped film.

this will come about at a later date; what follows will only form slowly, afterward. recounting a fumbling, pyramid of a year i stretch to the left, to the right, forward and back. it only becomes real in this small, wooden room that i am unfamiliar with. trying to attribute familiar memories. framed photographs in haunting new places. subjects linger in the frame, asking me out loud (while they pull my sleeves): "what are we doing here?"

i have no answer for them; the faces i am trained to know as a memory, but not able to remember.

today was a long day, full of lots of dreaming about:

01. farming. this season always gets my mind racing in the direction of another life. i can attribute much of this to the fact that november brings the royal agricultural winter fair to my home city. this fair is one that i have grown up with; from visits with my parents as a little girl, to visits with my ninth grade drawing class to sketch animal portraits, and up to the past few years with my new-found goal of meeting/picking the brains of farmers.
last winter, i came home with: my name in a draw for a free alpaca baby, about four zillion information pamphlets on fibre farming, information on how to join the ontario alpaca association, and one pretty great farmer friend. sadly, i did not win the alpaca baby. probably for the best, though... (for the time being!)
02. albumen printing. my dear friend & pen pal amanda came by today to share with us some of her work in albumen. i've recently been working with cyanotype and van dyke processes and have been more or less infatuated, but seeing amanda's work today confirmed my desire to get my hands dirty in the nasty, stinky, old egg process that is albumen printing.
i can't seem to get enough of historical processes (as mentioned in previous post), and amanda's process-based mindset for her work keeps inspiring me to keep better notes and keep exploring the exciting historical processes world (see: this book).

they are both now added to my list of goals. or, at least, my mental list of goals.
i guess i'll also add to that, make a list of goals.

it's raining. i'm waiting for the "weather bomb", half in excitement, even though i know that storms rarely get intense in southern ontario. i'm sitting under the skylight so i can watch the rain intensify, but it's slowing instead. i'm slightly disappointed. but, having the time to sit and wait for rain is something i haven't been able to do for a long time, so i'm going to enjoy it.

good day, y'all!

today was successful. my first time printing in the cyanotype process was fantastic. i'm too shy to scan anything yet, but i feel good things about this process. i can't wait to start experimenting with plants & other strange things i can use as a negative. it excites in me feelings that i forgot existed, as i have gotten lost in the 'digital' world lately... which tends to eat up my energy, encourage frustration, and ultimately, end in dissatisfaction. maybe i am meant for something older, more tactile, and process-based.

also! i received a long-awaited package in the mail (long-awaited being an understatement): hasselblad. and let. me. tell. you. i can hardly wait to get out there and start taking pictures! my excitement is exceeding my ability to sit still and read the manual, but i must be smart about this and learn slowly and carefully.

here are a few photographs from my recent trip to brooklyn. i've been meaning to scan all my negatives but uuuuuugg it takes forever. i think i will have to reconsider getting them professionally scanned, because the dust bits and quality are maybe notsogood.

braised brussel sprouts with cream

hey brussel sprout haters, this one's for you.
i know that its going to be hard to convince you to try this. so i'll tell you, i used to be one of you.
my mom would make brussel sprouts for every holiday, and they would remain in their sad little bowl, untouched, other than the few she ate. ninety percent of them would go to the dogs during cleanup. even the dogs weren't fond of them.
but then my good friend erika changed my whole figurative vegetable world with one recipe: braised brussel sprouts with cream. sounds gross, is amazing in actuality (and SO easy).
i couldn't get my hands on erika's recipe so i just sort of figured it out through trial and error.

the first thing is, buy small sprouts. big sprouts are gross. they are bitter, which is probably why you hate them. small sprouts are less bitter, and cuter. a pound is a good amount.

here's what else you'll need:

3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1 cup cream (heavy is best, but half and half is fine)
big skillet

then, five easy steps:

01. trim. cut the stem off and remove all nasty, dark, outer leaves. then slice the sprout from top to bottom.

02. butter the pan. three tablespoons unsalted butter, medium heat. add the salt.

03. throw the sprouts in. stir occasionally, for 5 minutes, or until they turn a little brown. (this is important: this is what takes away the bitterness. brown is good.)

04. add cream. turn heat to low. stir in, cover, and let sit for 30-35 minutes. you may need to stir occasionally if you use half and half cream, because it bubbles.
(i have purposely omitted the image because you wouldn't like the way it looks. never judge a book by its cover... you'll see what i mean!)

05. serve immediately.

try it. i converted four sprout-haters this thanksgiving.

this morning, my friend & coworker ashley alerted me to the HILARIOUS reality that it is (supposedly) possible to breed camel-llaama hybrids. i'm not sure if this is for real or just an internet scam as so many things are, but i've done some quick google-searches and turns out, this "cama" (camel-llaama) is seemingly real...(not to mention the other apparent animal hybrids: zorse, zonkey, zony... and, if you've ever seen napoleon dynamite, turns out the liger's been done!)
so, thanks to artificial insemination, we've got a fusion of two of my favorite animals of all!!!... i'm a bit freaked out. plus, he's got awful teeth. supposedly, he is the only cama in existence as of late.
and no, he does not have a hump (disappointing).

i've been a reader/follower of sandra juto for some time (i can't even remember how long), always admiring her illustrations, photography, and yarn creations...

it took me SO long to choose which images to post here, every single one is so intriguing and textured, i'm obsessed. i can't even imagine how cool it must have been to explore this place...

after spending a few weekends up north and watching greens change quickly to reds & oranges and the water turn ice cold, i can't help but feel fall in my bones. i can't seem to wear too many sweaters, and yes, i did buy a few scarves since last time i wrote here... i mostly love this season for the layers, and my very favorite shop, greatest friend, has the most beautiful things for fall... i had to share my favorite items, although my wallet & i aren't very close friends right now, so i can't have them. maybe you could buy them, and let me borrow them? k cool thanks.
in other news, i can now (legally) drive, but i hate driving in the city. i much prefer the dirt roads. it's been a long time coming, me getting a license, but i'm starting to feel that i will only use it to get to the cottage & the farm. city drivers are nasty.
also, i have three rolls of film from the mamiya to develop, and one roll of 35 that i shot of sadie at the cottage this weekend. i'll try to get around to scanning them soon... i'm so horribly lazy...

camping at the lake couldn't have gone by quicker. we played endless amounts of board games & drank my favorite tea right now - rose petal & chamomile.
sadie, our new adopted dog, thoroughly enjoyed her first camping trip - we couldn't get her out of the lake.
(she may or may not have accidentally killed a frog by licking it too hard.) her & the 8 month old akita pup got in a few scraps, but overall, i think, were secret lovers.

i especially love the photograph of the fish; it reminds me of being thirteen, camping near a river in the fall. the salmon were swimming upstream to mate, and i was in the middle of the river, standing on a rock- my foot slipped into the water and frightened the salmon, and, what felt like hundreds of them, threw their giant, slimy bodies up and out of the water, flipping and flopping around me until i fell into the shallow river. i was sure i would be transported upstream along with them, or perhaps eaten, but to my surprise, i survived (LUCKY).

i keep revisiting the work of "image-creator" maria grossman lately. she creates scenes that are so elegant and full of personality. i want to jump into each of her bodies of work and explore the scenes that she creates. her use of intricate textiles is so incredible. it might be my favorite element of her work alongside the engrossing storytelling quality of each of her photographs. these images are some of her non-food work, from the series recycling, magnolia, bauten, and lucky symbols, respectively.

i'm trying to be less internet-involved and get my feet in some soil this summer (which begins today for me). i am working on some new personal projects that i think i may share once in a while, if i can get my act together and figure out how to work my scanner. in that event, i will *hopefully* make time to upload some of my work from the past semester so certain-someones will believe me that i actually do go to school and make "stuff".

i think this book list should also keep me pretty tied up, as well as four (maybe five) weddings, two summer courses, a newly built cottage at the lake, friends returning home, farm visits, and copious amounts of antique market trips, among other things.

a story out of tune, wet grass between your toes. it's always the same in here. i climbed an icy hill towards that broken down barn and fell and hit my knee hard. it didn't bleed, but later turned into a dirty purple bruise and it hurt to walk for days. later, when i found the photographs they were different than how i remembered taking them, and the sun was different too... brighter. the wallpaper in the house wasn't peeling as much and the floors seemed more stable. the worst thing was that i couldn't hear the curtains hitting the empty window frames.

i dont know how long this will stay around but for now i found a comfortable spot on my bathroom floor on the white rug, almost like beach sand and i dont have shoes or socks and it's weightless, cold tiles around the edges like water but i dont care for touching it, for spelling mistakes or shy letters, for waste (only for truth), for loss of control; instead for once it is a beautiful thing to lose it, numbness isn't so nice to look at, so i think tomorrow ill wake up and plan things according to what i want, go back to those places and see them from strange and different eyes like going back in time like not sweating so much when it's cold out still like not breathing so heavy when i'm asleep, people wake me up and ask what's wrong and i'm so confused! usually i end up wedged between the bed and the wall anyway it's so much quieter inside there. but maybe this rug is quieter, or maybe i just need a new rug.

this weekend and past week have been full of dogsitting, visitors, working, and reorganizing the apartment. so much work is still needed to be done, i think a trip to ikea is in order- the new catalog came and i spent an entire day with it. paperclips on the pages of things i want/need. organization is a must right now. can't let the pieces fall apart!...
slowly putting up pictures from the italy/greece trip in june & july. you can see some of them here. also, some more recent pictures from late july at the beach here.

for those who don't already know (because i haven't stopped talking about it)... on monday, sim and i are off on a plane (AF607105!...joking.) to romaaaa. so excited, can barely contain it, etc, etc.
after a few days in rome we're going to explore a bit more of italy, then cross the border to greece. i will post occasionally while i'm traveling, hopefully some stories of our adventures, people we meet, places we see.
so, if you're looking for me, you can find me here...

i'm a little absent from this space lately... much of the little down time i have had is filled with sleep, the beach, planning the trip (less than 2 weeks!), or staring at images of simple things or moments that don't frustrate or complicate my mind. i came across bordon's photostream and found more or less exactly that... and love looking through his work.
back to planning now. working on hostels in the greek islands...can't wait for that escape from reality... even though it's just someone else's reality. funny.

life slows down.
we sit on the new porch that your mother's boyfriend built over the weekend. it's only twelve degrees, but the humidity is in my eyes, in my throat, in my blood. often we can't speak, and the eerie quiet sort of fades, into the backdrop, into the alleyway behind us. take a breath of the wet fog through my fingertips, my elbows, my ears, my eyelids. aches, pains, squish into the chair. heavy sleeves, heavy arms...i forgot to laugh at something. you're talking, fervently, soberly, drunkenly, "all things aside".
you're talking, i'm dreaming. i'm watching your fingertips, your elbow, your ear, your eyelid. one eyelid. open close. you make this face when you're confused... i wait for it. i'm first person, third person, oblivious, floating, sleeping, and you're making me tea.

it feels like years ago sometimes. i went on a tiny vacation. you can try to see it and feel like i did, but most of it, just like being a little kid, fades into just a memory, a photograph of such a short second. i haven't yet decided if i like it that way, or if i would prefer just to jump back into the lens.

this is the entrance to the church where timmy & ann got married. just outside hong kong, on top of a mountain. it was easier to breathe up there, and it had a great view of the city.
